Tofazzal Hossain, 32, was beaten to death at Dhaka University's Fazlul Haq Muslim Hall after being suspected of theft on Wednesday night.
He was a former president of the Kathaltali Union branch of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Barguna’s Patharghata upazila.
Relatives said Tofazzal had been mentally unstable since a romantic heartbreak.
And things worsened with the loss of his parents and brother in a quick succession. Left without family, he was reduced to wandering the streets, they said.
On Wednesday night, students at the hall reportedly detained and beat him. At one stage of the beating, they took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Relatives said they had pleaded with the students — when they phoned them — to release him, reasoning that he was a mentally unstable person.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Munsoor said that legal proceedings regarding Tofazzal’s killing are underway.
