Stocks open higher as small-cap shares surge

Stocks opened higher on Tuesday as bargain hunters put fresh bets on rumour-based junk stocks in anticipation of short-term gains.

A section of investors chased for junk stocks once again such as Miracle Industries, Shyampur Sugar Mills, Ambee Pharma and Libra Infusion topped the gainers list till then.

Following the previous day’s flat ending, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 9.22 points to 6,292 after the first two hours of trading at 12:00 noon.

The DS30 Index, which consists of blue-chip companies, gained 2.82 points to 2,139 and the DSES index, which represents Shariah-based companies, rose 1.86 points to 1,361 till then.

Turnover stood at Tk 1.97 billion after the first two hours of trading.

Low-cap stocks dominated the turnover list with Union Insurance topped the turnover list with shares worth Tk 108 million changing hands till then, followed by Silva Pharma, City General Insurance, Miracle Industries and Gemini Sea Food.

Of the issues traded till then, 118 advanced, 29 declined and 102 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also opened higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – rising 14 points to 18,593 till then.
