The issue came up at a meeting held at the BSEC headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday between senior officials of the securities regulator and a six-member delegation from the IMF's Climate Policy Diagnostic Technical Assistance Mission, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.

BSEC Commissioner Tanwir Habib Rahman attended the meeting along with senior officials from the relevant departments. The six-member IMF delegation was led by Suphachol Suphachalasai, Team Leader of the Climate Policy Diagnostic Technical Assistance Mission.

The meeting focused on the development of Bangladesh's capital market for green bonds, sustainability bonds, and other thematic bonds.

Discussions also covered progress in developing the sustainable finance taxonomy, verification processes for bond issuance, impact reporting, strengthening external review mechanisms, preparedness of potential issuers, assessment of investor demand, and enhancing coordination among regulators and development partners.

Both sides underscored the need to expand the role of the capital market in promoting sustainable finance and climate-resilient investment in Bangladesh.

They also exchanged views on strengthening institutional capacity, improving policy frameworks, and enhancing market infrastructure in line with international best practices to support the country's sustainable finance agenda.
