Stocks ended higher on Tuesday as investor confidence strengthened on expectations that the proposed margin rules would be eased before receiving final approval.
The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) recently published draft amendments to the Margin Rules aimed at making margin lending more flexible and investor-friendly, boosting investor confidence.
The benchmark DSEX index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange gained 41 points, or 0.71 per cent, to close at 5,899.
Market operators said investor sentiment remained upbeat following the securities regulator's clarification regarding the proposed amendments to the margin rules. Investors expect the final rules to be more flexible after the regulator incorporates feedback from stakeholders.
The DS30 index, comprising leading blue-chip companies, gained 11.16 points to 2,220, while the DSES index, which tracks Shariah-based stocks, increased 6.73 points to 1,204.
Market participation improved on Tuesday, with turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) dropping to Tk 11.29 billion from Tk 9.67 billion in the previous session.
Gainers outnumbered Losers on the DSE floor. Of the 393 issues traded, 294 closed higher and 58 ended lower, while 41 remained unchanged.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange also ended higher, with its All Shares Price Index (CASPI) gaining 60.23 points to 15,798 while the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) increased 37.32 points to 9,653.
