The government will buy three more liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from the international spot market by late December next to help meet the country's mounting demand for natural gas.

The state-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd has invited tenders for buying LNG cargoes from the spot market for November 22-23, November 25-26 and December 26-27 delivery windows, a senior RPGCL official told The Financial Express on Sunday.

The volume of the proposed spot LNG cargo would be around 3.36 million British thermal unit (MMBtu) each.

Such LNG cargoes are to be delivered to Moheshkhali Island, with an option to discharge it at either of the country's two floating storage regasification units (FSRUs), located on the island.

Bangladesh has so far bought only one spot LNG cargo for November delivery, and if the tender turns out successful, the country's spot LNG cargo purchase for November deliveries would be three.

The RPGCL might seek to buy more LNG cargoes from the spot market for late December delivery window, said the official.

Bangladesh has been purchasing an increased number of spot LNG cargoes over the past several months under a plan to boost supply of natural gas to industries, said the RPGCL official.

Bangladesh awarded its latest spot LNG cargo tender to TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd for November 11-12 delivery window at the rate of US$11.549 per million British thermal unit (MMBtu).

The RPGCL is a wing of Petrobangla and it looks after LNG trading in Bangladesh.

Apart from the spot LNG cargoes, Bangladesh has been importing LNG from its two existing long-term suppliers-- QatarEnergy LNG (formerly Qatargas) and OQ Trading International -- for regasification at its two operational FSRUs.

Besides, it has been importing additional LNG cargo from OQ Trading International of Oman under a newly inked sales and purchase agreement, official said, adding that it would buy a total of 17 LNG cargoes during the period from August 2025 to December 2026, said the RPGCL official.

Bangladesh has been rationing gas supply to industries, power plants and other gas-guzzling consumers to cope with its mounting demand.

The country's overall natural gas supply local gas and imported LNG combined -- was around 2,753 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) including 1,008 mmcfd of regasified LNG, against its demand of 4,000 mmcfd, according to official data as on September 6, 2025.
