The Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA) has urged the government to immediately ban the export of jute silver, alleging that the practice is undermining the country's jute sector while allowing exporters to enjoy an unjustified 10 per cent cash incentive.Newspapers
In a press release issued on Monday, the association said raw jute exports have remained suspended since the Ministry of Commerce imposed conditions on such exports through a notification issued on September 8, 2025, to ensure adequate raw materials for domestic industries.
Despite the restriction, exports of jute silver-a primary-stage processed form of raw jute-have continued and are receiving a 10 per cent cash incentive, although the product is neither a high value-added item nor entitled to such benefits under the government's export incentive policy, the association alleged.
According to the BJA, jute silver is merely an intermediate industrial raw material that is further processed abroad into yarn and other jute products. Maps
It also claimed the product has no separate HS Code and does not qualify as a jute diversification product eligible for export incentives.
The association further alleged that the continuation of jute silver exports has allowed jute mill owners to take advantage of the suspension of raw jute exports by exporting large quantities of the product while receiving government incentives.
Calling the issue detrimental to the country's overall jute sector,
the BJA urged the government to take immediate steps to ban jute silver exports in the greater national interest and to safeguard the sector.
