Bangladesh and Thailand want to further expand their existing trade relations and make more effective use of maritime transport facilities between the two nations.

The views came when Thailand Ambassador to Bangladesh, Thitiporn Chirasawadi, made a courtesy call on Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Udding at the latter's Secretariat office on Sunday, said a press statement.

The Commerce Adviser informed the Thai envoy that the government was

creating 'excellent opportunities' for foreign investors.

He also encouraged Thai investors to take advantage of such opportunities through investing in Bangladesh's growing pharmaceuticals, shrimp, furniture, and tourism sectors, it mentioned.

Such investments, he said, would create mutually beneficial opportunities for both Bangladesh and Thailand.

However, the Thai Ambassador emphasised the importance of enhancing logistics connectivity through sea routes and maritime transport.

She said a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries would significantly increase trade volumes between the two countries.

The Thai envoy also laid emphasis on launching the first-ever maritime trade route between Ranong Port in Thailand and Chattogram Port in Bangladesh, along with advancing discussions on a Thailand-Bangladesh FTA.

Highlighting the benefits of improved connectivity, Ms. Chirasawadi said using Thailand's western Ranong seaport for bilateral trade would greatly reduce both shipping time and cost.
