Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority or BEZA on Friday formally handed over 30 acres of land at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) in Chattogram to the Berger Paints for establishing an industrial unit there.

The Bangladesh operations of the multinational paint manufacturer will establish its third industrial facility in the country with investment of around Tk 2.5 billion.

Paban Chowdhury, executive chairman of BEZA, handed over the land to Rupali Chowdhury, managing director (MD) of the Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited, at a ceremony held at the BSMSN, said a press release.

The industrial unit is expected to start manufacturing within the next five years, creating employment for around 400 people in the initial phase.

Berger Bangladesh established its first plant in 1970 in Chattogram and the second one in Savar in 1999.

Berger will establish water and solvent-based paint manufacturing plant, emulsion plant, resins plant, central raw material warehouse and other required establishments at the proposed industrial complex considering the future local and international market.

Speaking on the occasion, Paban Chowdhury said Bangladesh had been able to present a 'development role model' by creating an investment-friendly atmosphere through the Economic Zones (EZs).

He also said the BEZA was developing the largest EZ of South Asia in Mirsarai.

"The industrial city will help the country bring about a unique industrial revolution, as well as help improve people's living standard achieving the SDGs," he said.

He also said a move was underway to frame a policy to make the EZs environment-friendly.

Berger MD Rupali Chowdhury said the company would start the factory construction work at the earliest possible time.

"Establishing an industrial unit in Mirsarai is a milestone for Berger," she said, adding that the company would continue to work for helping the environment-friendly paint manufacturing flourish in the country.

BEZA is developing the BSMSN, a modern industrial city, comprising three adjoining upazilas - Chattogram's Mirsarai and Sitakunda and Fein's Sonatas.

BSMSN is being developed on a contiguous land of 30,000 acres along the coast lines of Sander channel of the Bay of Bengal.

The industrial city has already attracted a good number of local and foreign investors thanks to the availability of all required utility services and policy support.
