The government has revised bus fares for city and long-route services, increasing rates by 11 paisa per kilometre in line with higher fuel costs.
Railways, Road Transport and Bridges, and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam announced the decision at a press conference at the ministry’s conference room on Thursday.
He said bus fares had not been arbitrarily increased but were adjusted in accordance with the rise in fuel prices. The new fares would come into effect upon issuance of a circular later in the day.
Under the new rates, per-kilometre fares for non-AC buses in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas have been set at Tk 2.53, up from Tk 2.42.
For inter-district routes, fares have been increased to Tk 2.23 per kilometre from Tk 2.12.
In the Dhaka metropolitan area and jurisdictions under the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, fares have been revised to Tk 2.43 per kilometre from Tk 2.32.
The minimum fares for buses and minibuses will remain unchanged at Tk 10 and Tk 8 respectively.
