China, Bangladesh working for currency swap

The Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka, Mr Li Jiming, on Friday, said that both countries are closely working to have currency swap arrangement for bilateral trade.

He said that he already had several meetings with the finance minister and the central bank governor in this regard, and they, in principle, agreed to have a currency swap.

But he mentioned that there are some technical problems with having currency swap arrangements as Bangladesh Bank is not connected to any alternative currency exchange system except SWIFT.

He informed that both countries are working to expedite the process.

Responding to a question, he also said that China has taken initiatives to open a China Study Center at Dhaka University.

He repainted by claiming that in such a densely populated country as Bangladesh, there isn't a single Chinese scholar.

The envoy also said that the Anglo-Saxon media are frequently propagating false news about China and unfortunately many Bangladeshi media run those news.

He urged all to follow authentic news regarding China through cross checks.

The envoy was responding to questions during a programme organised by the China Media Group in the city.

An Xiao Yu, a delegate of the 20th National Congress and the director general of China media groups, Asia and African languages department spoke at the programme virtually from Beijing.

In his speech, Mr Yu said the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held recently where the overall goals of China’s further development was determined.

"China’s new journey means China’s new development. China’s new development brings a new opportunity for the world too. "Modernisation of Chinese characteristics in the modernization of a large population, the common prosperity of all people, the harmony between material, civilization, and special," Mr. Yu stated.

Yu Li Wen, cultural counsellor of Chinese embassy, Ke Chang Liang, president of Chinese Enterprises Association in Bangladesh, Vai Chunlei,  executive chairman of Bangladesh Association for the promotion of peaceful reunification of China also attended the programme.

The speakers of the programme said the exchanges of information and culture between China and Bangladesh is getting stronger through the information and writing of the Bengali department of the China media group.

The exchange is contributing to cementing the relations between the peoples of the two countries, they said.
