The European Union will provide a fund worth 500 million euros to support the country's readymade garment workers, informed sources said.
The fund will be disbursed among the RMG workers, who might lose jobs or become jobless for initially three months beginning from July, they said, adding it might be extended up to six months depending on fund availability and the number of workers.
Mohammad Hatem senior vice president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) confirmed the development.
Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, a director of the BKMEA, also said a good number of workers might lose job as a result of the impact of coronavirus outbreak."The EU will provide the financial support to those workers for three months from July to September, which might be extended up to December," he added.
A jobless worker will get Tk 3,000 as an additional support besides his\her lawful other compensation, he said. The EU fund would not be provided to pay legal pays or other legal benefits.
