Gold prices in Bangladesh surged to a historic high on Saturday, with the price of 22-carat gold rising to Tk 1,44,890 per bhori.
The new price will take effect from Sunday, Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) announced on Saturday night, attributing the hike to rising prices of pure gold in the local market.
The latest price surge by the BAJUS marks the highest in the country's history, following an increase of up to Tk 2,099 per bhori.
From Sunday, the price of 22-carat gold will increase by Tk 2,099 to Tk 1,44,890 per bhori, 21-carat by Tk 1,994 to Tk 1,38,300, 18-carat by Tk 1,714 to Tk 1,18,541, and traditional gold by Tk 1,458 to Tk 97,476.
However, the price of silver remains unchanged.
Globally, gold prices have also reached a record high, with one ounce of gold touching $2,800 for the first time, which traders say has in fact led to a surge in prices of pure gold in Bangladesh market.
