Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered the formation of a high-level committee to address the existing problems facing Bangladesh's textile industry.
The prime minister's Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfiquar Hasan shared the decision on Wednesday after a meeting between Tarique and a delegation from the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association at the Prime Minister's Office in the Secretariat, bdnews24.com reports.
"The current state of the country's textile industry, its export potential and the various challenges facing the sector were discussed during the meeting," Mostafa said.
"The association's leaders highlighted the problems and obstacles confronting the textile industry, as well as the steps needed to enhance its competitiveness in the international market. The prime minister listened to their concerns with keen interest and directed the formation of a high-level committee to review the existing problems and recommend solutions."
The committee will determine the measures needed to promote the development of the textile industry, create employment opportunities and increase export earnings before taking the necessary steps.
During the meeting, the leaders of the association briefed Tarique on the current state of the textile sector and discussed how its expansion could generate more employment.
The deputy press secretary said the prime minister praised the textile industry's contribution to the country's industrialisation, employment and export earnings, and assured the sector of the government's support for its further development.
