Ratio of default loans low in consumer credit

Non-Performing Loans (NPLs), popularly known as default loans, is low against the consumer credit disbursed in the last calendar year.

Financial Stability Report 2018, published by Bangladesh Bank last month, showed that the ratio on NPLs in consumer credit was around 5.0 per cent on average.

It showed that outstanding amount of consumer credit stood at Tk 476.40 billion at the end of 2018 while gross NPL against the amount was Tk 23.90 billion. Thus ratio of gross NPL stood at 5..0 per cent in the past year.

Central bank statistics also showed that among the four categories of the consumer credit, ratio of NPLs in housing finance was highest, around 7.11 per cent. It was followed by credit card (6.09 per cent), personal loan (3.73 per cent) and car loan (2.26 per cent).
