Seven firms, one individual to get National Tea Award

The government is set to recognise seven firms and an individual with the National Tea Award for the first time in the country, for their outstanding contribution to the tea industry.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi will hand over the award at a programme marking the National Tea Day - to be observed on June 04 next. The commerce ministry and Bangladesh Tea Board will jointly organise the event.

The award is expected to help facilitate export and market diversification of the item.

According to the National Tea Award Policy 2022, the awardees have been selected as per best tea estate based on highest yield/acreage, best quality tea estate based on highest average price in tea auction, best garden based on labour welfare, best tea exporter based on foreign earning, best small-scale tea garden based on highest yield/acreage, best company based on diversified tea products in the market, best company based on attractive and safe packaging, and best worker based on highest tea-leaf plucking.

A small-scale tea garden should be less than 25 acres, the National Tea Award Policy 2022 mentioned.

The first meeting regarding the issue has been held with the commerce minister Tipu Munshi in the chair. Senior Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh and senior officials of the ministry attended the meeting.

A total of 148 tea gardens are currently registered with the Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB).
