Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Thursday called on mobile operator Grameenphone to address persistent public concerns over call drops, network quality and the pricing of voice and data packages, saying customer interests must remain a top priority.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of Grameenphone’s ‘Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities – Phase II’ programme at Sheraton Dhaka, the minister said telecommunications operators should take effective measures to ensure affordable, reliable and uninterrupted services for consumers.
“While business growth is important, equal importance must also be given to customers’ expectations and interests,” he said, adding that providing high-quality services should remain the foremost responsibility of service providers.
The minister also stressed that the benefits of digital technology must reach every citizen, particularly women, young people, persons with disabilities, transgender communities and other marginalised groups, so they can participate equally in Bangladesh’s digital transformation.
He said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is working to expand digital connectivity nationwide and is placing strong emphasis on digital inclusion, digital literacy and the development of a skilled workforce to support the country’s ambition of becoming a US$1 trillion economy by 2034.
Calling for wider expansion of telecommunications services in remote and underserved areas, Mr Anam said no region should be left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey. He noted that accessible and affordable connectivity is essential for inclusive development and for improving people’s quality of life.
The minister formally inaugurated Grameenphone’s ‘Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities – Phase II’ initiative at the conclusion of the programme.
Among those attending the event were Yasir Azman, Md. Emdad Ul Bari, senior government officials, representatives of the private sector, development partners and other stakeholders.
