DUCSU Elections

Published :

Updated :

THE HIGH COURT (HC) responding to a writ petition recently issued an order on Dhaka University (DU) authority to arrange Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections within next six months. Following the petition, the HC issued a rule upon the government and the DU authorities to explain why they should not be directed to hold the DUCSU election immediately.

One of the most significant contributions of the DUCSU was to produce a number of high-profile student leaders who later emerged as national leaders. Most importantly, DUCSU leaders led some of the most important political movements in our history ---the language movement in 1952, mass uprising in '69, the liberation movement in '71, and the anti-autocracy movement in '91. The  DUCSU has been known as the apex body of DU students for politics and cultural activities. It is called a mini-parliament of Bangladesh and many high-ups of the government are direct products of the DUCSU. Based on the order of the High Court, it is now time for effective steps by the DU authority to hold DUCSU elections properly within the given time.
