A total of 19 people were killed in unrest that erupted at an incarceration facility in the western Sri Lankan city of Negombo, while at least 50 others were injured, police said.
Those who sustained injuries were admitted to Negombo Hospital. Authorities were taking steps to transfer those with serious injuries to the National Hospital in Colombo, police said.
The unrest initially occurred on Sunday at around 1:00 pm when two groups of inmates clashed with each other. The situation was brought under control by Sunday night. However, violence broke out again on Monday morning, reports Xinhua.
Among those dead and wounded are prison officers and security force personnel.
