The Afghan National Army commandoes conducted an operation and freed 10 civilians from a Taliban prison in the country's northern province of Kunduz, a military source said Saturday.

"The raid was launched in Aq Saray village, Chahar Dara district late Friday, and the building used by the Taliban as a detention center was destroyed by the security forces," Ghulam Hazrat Karimi, spokesman of army Corps 217 Pamir based in the region said.

The civilians were shifted to an army camp for identification process before being provided accommodation and they would join their families soon, Xinhua reported.

The militants guarding the facility fled before the troops' arrival and the security force did not use their weapons during the raid, the source added.

Taliban insurgents frequently detain civilians from across villages and highways and charge them for spying for government security forces.
