A court in Dhaka on Saturday placed Tanim Reza Bappi and his associate Rakibul Islam Bhuiyan on a seven-day remand each in a case filed over allegedly extorting a businessman.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order after police produced the duo before the court and sought a seven-day remand for each of them in the case.

Police arrested Bappi from the capital's Dilkusha area on Friday while Rakibul was arrested from the Kamalapur area. Acting on information provided by the accused, law enforcers later conducted a raid at Bappi's office in South Kamalapur and recovered one foreign-made revolver, two foreign-made pistols, five rounds of revolver ammunition, two rounds of pistol ammunition, two magazines, an electric stun gun and a Chinese-made axe.

According to the case documents, the accused called complainant Ismail Hossain on May 15 and allegedly pressured him to appoint a person nominated by them as a partner in the sacrificial cattle market. Bappi also allegedly demanded Taka 1.0 million in extortion.

The case documents further said the accused opened fire at Ismail's office on May 19. Ismail filed the case with Motijheel Police Station the following day.
