Seven faculty members and one student from Jahangirnagar University have been listed among the top two percent of the most-cited scientists in the world in a journal published by Stanford University-based researchers in the US.
On Saturday, September 20, the list was published in an Elsevier journal, based on research by John P. A. Ioannidis, a researcher at the Meta-Research Innovation Center of Stanford University, USA.
The scientists are Prof. A. A. Mamun of the Department of Physics, Assoc. Prof. Md. Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of Environmental Science, Asst. Prof. Md. Sayeed Al-Zaman of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Prof. Md. Enamul Haque of the Department of Chemistry, Md. Nurul Islam of the Department of Chemistry, and Prof. M. Shamim Kaiser of the Institute of Information Technology.
The sole student in the list is Md. A. Mamun of the Department of Public Health and Informatics.
Speaking about the achievement, Prof. M. Shamim Kaiser said, “I am truly proud and grateful. This marks my fourth consecutive recognition, having previously been acknowledged in 2022, 2023, and 2024. This accomplishment reflects not only my effort but also the invaluable support of my students, co-authors, and colleagues.”
Meanwhile, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Kamrul Ahsan congratulated the researchers, saying, “Having eight members from Jahangirnagar University listed among the top 2% researchers globally is a matter of pride and honor for the university. This continuous achievement in research enhances JU’s reputation nationally and internationally, and we hope our researchers will continue to receive global recognition.”
The list is prepared by analyzing research publications, H-index, citations, and other metrics, and categorizes scientists across 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, determining top researchers based on their entire career contributions as well as single-year research performance.
The Stanford-Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List is a globally recognized benchmark that values researchers for their exceptional citation impact and long-term academic contributions. Elsevier publishes over 2,000 journals annually, featuring more than 250,000 articles in its archives, which collectively contain over 7 million publications.
