Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President (VP) Shadik Kayem has stepped down from politics in Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, where he most recently served as the organisation’s Central Secretary for International Affairs.
The matter was confirmed on Monday by Chhatra Shibir Secretary General Sibghatullah Sibga.
Speaking on the issue, Shadik Kayem said the organisation undergoes structural reorganisation twice a year and that he stepped down as part of its semi-annual organisational restructuring for 2026.
Shadik Kayem is currently serving as the Vice-President of DUCSU. He gained prominence for his role in coordinating and carrying out various organisational responsibilities during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
Earlier, on May 1, at a conference held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) Council Hall in Kakrail, Jamaat-e-Islami announced Shadik Kayem as its mayoral candidate for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election.
Following the announcement, Chhatra Shibir stated that its office-bearers are not permitted to contest elections on behalf of any political party while holding organisational posts. In line with that policy, Shadik left the organisation during its latest restructuring process.
It is widely expected that he will formally join Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and contest the upcoming DSCC mayoral election as the party’s candidate.
Shadik Kayem joined Chhatra Shibir in 2013. He publicly emerged as president of the Dhaka University unit of the organisation on September 21, 2024.
Since January 2026, he has served as the Central Secretary for International Affairs, having previously held the position of Central Publication Secretary for the 2025–26 term.
