The investigation committee formed over the assault on leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and members of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association inside Shahbagh Police Station has failed to submit its report even after 13 days, despite an initial three-day deadline.

The incident took place on April 23 in the evening, when tensions reportedly escalated between activists of Islami Chhatrashibir and Jatiotabadi Chatradal over a controversial photocard circulated in the name of a DU student. Journalists attempting to cover the situation were obstructed and later assaulted when they protested.

The university administration formed the investigation committee the same night, asking it to submit its findings within three working days.

According to a press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on April 23, the committee is headed by Assistant Proctor Professor Mohammad Mahbub Quaisar. Other members include Assistant Proctor Dr Shantu Barua, Dr Md Mosaddek Khan, Dr Rafiqul Islam, Rezaul Karim Sohag, and Amjad Hossain.

However, more than 13 days have passed since the incident, and the committee has yet to submit its report.

When contacted, committee convener Professor Mahbub Quaisar said, “We have been given time until this week. We may need a few more days as an extension to submit the report.”

Regarding the progress of the investigation, he said, “The investigation is ongoing. For the sake of a fair inquiry, we do not want to disclose details at this moment. We have held discussions with both the complainants and the accused parties, and the process is still underway.”

Addressing the delay, he added, “We are not a law enforcement agency. Alongside this responsibility, we also have our academic duties.”
