Swimming is an essential life skill. Be it for a kid or an adult, swimming is such a skill that it can be your life's saviour. And not to mention, it is a fantastic form of exercise. Surprisingly, 54% of adults globally do not know how to perform basic swimming.
In Bangladesh, the percentage is lower in rural areas but even higher in cities. Although in big cities like Dhaka, it is nearly impossible to find natural swimming places such as ponds, lakes, or rivers, there are a few swimming pools where kids and adults can learn to swim under the supervision of certified coaches.
Dhaka University Swimming Pool
The Dhaka University swimming pool is open to everyone, including the university's teachers, staff, and students. For outsiders, the fee is Tk 2,600. For the first month, this fee covers 16 training classes with a coach, each lasting 1 hour.
From the second month, you will only need to pay the membership renewal fee, which is tk 1,300. However, if you are a student at Dhaka University, you can enjoy two weekly classes for only an amount of tk 100. People of all ages can get a membership to the DU swimming pool, though you need to be at least 4 feet tall to access the pool. The pool is closed on every Thursday.
Dhaka Officers Club Swimming Pool
The Dhaka Officers Club's swimming pool, situated at Bailey Road, offers training and opportunities to participate in different swimming competitions.
The pool is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Men and women have different sessions in different slots throughout the day. The 16-day training fee for Officers Club members is tk 1000. But for outsiders, it is tk 7,200 (for girls) and tk 6,800 (for boys).
Sultana Kamal Women's Sports Complex
As the name suggests, this place is dedicated to women's sportsmanship. Sultana Kamal Women's Complex offers swimming pool access to girls aged five and above and boys under seven.
There are different training sessions for swimmers, starting at Tk 1,500 up to Tk 4,000. It is located at Dhanmondi Road 32.
Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex
The Bangladesh Swimming Federation established the Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex in Mirpur. It is accessible to male and female swimming learners in different sessions.
The training program here is one month long, 5 days a week. Sundays and Mondays are weekly off-days of the complex.
To gain admission to the swimming training session, you must pay Tk 3,000. In the later months, the fee is Tk 2,500 monthly. A trainee must be at least eight years old, but a guardian can accompany trainees under ten.
Ivy Rahman Swimming Pool, Bangabandhu National Stadium
Ivy Rahman Swimming Pool, located at Bangabandhu National Stadium Road, Motijheel, is another popular place for swimmers and learners. It is another government swimming facility in Bangladesh.
The fee is tk 2,500 for the first month of admission and tk 2,000 for the following months. The pool is open five days a week, so Sundays and Mondays are off days again.
