Guinness World Records initiates review of 'world's oldest dog' title

Guinness World Records (GWR) has announced a formal review of the title 'world's oldest dog' bestowed upon a Portuguese canine named Bobi, who passed away in October of last year. The move comes in response to scepticism from veterinarians regarding Bobi's age, challenging the record's credibility.

Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro Alentejano from central Portugal, was initially declared the world's oldest dog in February by GWR, with a reported age of 31 years and 165 days. This surpassed the previous record held since 1939 by an Australian cattle dog that lived to the age of 29 years and five months. However, doubts surrounding Bobi's age have prompted a thorough reevaluation.

The controversy stems from the fact that Bobi's breed typically has a life expectancy of 12-14 years, making his reported age remarkable. Veterinarians raised concerns about the record's authenticity, prompting GWR to conduct a comprehensive review.

A spokesperson for Guinness World Records stated on Tuesday that the ongoing review involves a meticulous examination of existing evidence and reaching out to experts and individuals associated with the original record application. The organisation has decided to temporarily suspend applications for both the 'oldest dog living' and 'oldest dog ever' titles until the investigation is complete.

Bobi's owner, Leonel Costa, expressed frustration in a statement, claiming that some members of the veterinary community attempted to discredit Bobi's life story after his demise. Costa attributed Bobi's longevity to a diet consisting of human food rather than conventional pet food, a detail that stirred controversy within the veterinary community.

While Costa insists that all requirements set by GWR were met, he revealed that the organisation had not contacted him during the ongoing review.

Guinness World Records clarified that no actions have been taken against any record holders at this time. The final decision will be based on the review's outcome, which remains pending.

Bobi's life, characterised by his love for walks even in his later years, diminishing adventurous spirit, thinning fur, worsening eyesight, and increased need for rest, captivated the public's attention.
