At least three people have died in separate road accidents in Dhaka’s Uttara.

Two journalists were killed after being hit by a bus while returning home after watching the FIFA World Cup semifinal on a giant screen.

The dead were identified as Robiul Alam Raju, a journalist with Dainik Praner Bangladesh, and Sakibul Hasan, a journalist with Songbad Diganta.

Sakibul was the finance secretary of the Uttara Press Club, while Robiul served as its hospitality secretary.

Police said the two were returning home after watching the England vs Argentina World Cup semifinal.

As they reached the Jasimuddin bus stand in Sector 3 of Uttara, they were run over by a bus.

They were rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared both dead.

Khalid Monsur, chief of Uttara West Police Station said the bus involved in the incident had not yet been identified, adding that police were trying to trace it.

In a separate incident, a 55-year-old auto bike trader was killed after being hit by a truck while crossing a road in Uttara on Wednesday night.

The victim, Anwarul Haque, was struck by a speeding truck at the U-turn near Jasimuddin Road around 9pm, according to his nephew, identified only as Parash.

Parash said Anwarul was returning to his home in Gazipur’s Konabari, after finishing work when the truck hit him and fled the scene, leaving him critically injured.

Passersby informed his family, who rescued him and took him first to Kurmitola Hospital.

As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 2:30am.

Doctors at the emergency department of DMCH declared him dead around 3am.

Anwarul Haque hailed from Ghoradah village in Sujanagar Upazila of Pabna district. He had been living with his family in Konabari and owned an auto garage.

Inspector Md Faruk, chief of the police camp at DMCH, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue.
