At least five of the six Bangladeshis killed in a shop fire in Queenstown, South Africa, were from Narayanganj district, local officials confirmed on Tuesday, the Daily Manobkantha reports.
The other victim was from neighboring Munshiganj.
The dead from Narayanganj were identified as Md Fahim, 29, Apon Ahmed, 23, Nur Mohammad, 55, and Md Faisal, 26, from Alirtek Union, alongside Md Shahin, 30, from Baktabali Union.
The victim from Munshiganj was Md Rajik, 55.
"Four of the victims are from my union and are close relatives," said Rowshan Ali, an Alirtek Union Parishad member.
Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Md Raihan Kabir said the administration is contacting the families, though formal notification from the foreign ministry is pending.
The fire broke out around 3:00 am local time Tuesday while the victims were sleeping inside the shop. All six died at the scene. Another individual was critically injured and hospitalized.
South African authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
