Ban on hilsa fishing: 307 fishermen jailed, fined in Manikganj

Some 307 fishermen were awarded different terms of jail in Manikganj district during the 22-ban on transporting, catching and hoarding mother hilsa across the country that ended on Thursday.

During this period, 3,547 metric tons of hilsa were seized and the mobile courts fined fishermen Tk 0.56 million for violating the government ban.

Mohamamd Maniruzzaman, fisheries official of District fisheries Department came up with the information at a press briefing held at his office on Thursday, reports UNB.

A total of 125 drives were conducted by the mobile courts while 319 cases were filed during this period.

Besides, 5.29 million meters of current nets were seized which were burnt later.

Shibalaya Upaizla Executive Magistrate AFM Firoz Mahmud was present at the press briefing.

The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of Hilsa from October 9 to October 30.
