Police have arrested Mobarak Hossain Emon aka David Emon, an absconding suspect accused in several cases in Chattogram on charges of murder and extortion.
He was arrested from Jashore’s Dhumdhumpur area in a joint operation by Jashore and Chattogram district police early on Wednesday morning, reports bdnews24.com.
Chattogram Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said, “Our operation is ongoing. Emon and four others have been arrested so far. Additional details will be made available after the operation ends.”
Emon is a close associate of top Chattogram criminal Sajjad Ali Khan alias Boro Sajjad. Police say that Emon was carrying out various criminal activities on behalf of Sajjad in Chattogram.
Recently, Emon's name came up in a case over a large extortion demand from a business in Chattogram.
A group had demanded a one-time extortion payment of Tk 20 million and another Tk 1 million per month from the owner of an internet service company named “Digital.net” in Chattogram’s Bakalia area. When the owner refused to pay, a group of 30-40 people went to the company’s office and committed extensive vandalism and looting.
Following the incident, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police conducted a raid and arrested several people. RAB interrogation revealed that the youths who attacked the ISP establishment were hired for only Tk 500 each, and Emon had allegedly ordered it.
Since then, the law-enforcing agencies have intensified efforts to arrest Emon. On Jul 27, police conducted a raid in the Bayezid Bostami Thana area and arrested two of Emon's associates, Asif and Saidul Islam Arif.
At that time, an Italian-made pistol and bullets were recovered from their possession.
Two days following the arrest of his associates, Emon was arrested as well.
