The authorities of Dhaka north and south city corporations will set up a total of 16 temporary cattle markets in the capital on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Ahza, sources at the corporations said.
Accordingly, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have taken adequate preparations for setting up eight makeshift cattle markets (haats) each in their respective areas.
Besides, two permanent cattle markets-- one in Gabtoli of Dhaka city north and the other in Sarulia of Dhaka city south-- will also be selling sacrificial animals during the upcoming Eid.
Officials at the DSCC and DNCC told the FE that they have already started the tender process to lease out the cattle markets, which is expected to be finalised within the current month.
An official at the DNCC estate section told the FE that the corporation called tenders on 2nd May for its eight temporary cattle markets and work orders will be given to the qualified bidders soon.
The cattle markets under the DNCC will be set up at Vatara (Sayeed Nagar), Uttara Diabari Baubazar, Uttara sectors # 16 and 18, Badda Eastern Housing or Aftabnagar open space from Block B to Block H, open space at section 6, Mirpur and Eastern Housing area, open space at Bochila Mohammadpur, playground of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, open space at Kaula-Sialdanga, and open space in Kanchkura Beparipara Rahmannagar residential area under ward no 44.
The DSCC has invited tenders for setting up makeshift cattle markets at the open space of the Institute of Leather Technology College, open space near Postogola Cremation Ground, open space near Meradia Kitchen Market, open space near Little Friends Club, open space near Kamalapur Stadium, open space near Dania College, Jatrabari, open space near Dolaikhal Truck Stand and open space near Rahmatganj Club.
Officials at the DSCC and DNCC told the FE that they were taking preparations to ensure hassle free and safe cattle trading at the markets during the Eid for the interests of traders and customers.
They said the corporations will not allow any unauthorised makeshift cattle markets in the city and legal actions will be taken against the violator/s of the corporation's directives.
Meanwhile, like previous year, the DNCC will also set up a digital cattle market for online trading of sacrificial animals. The Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association-affiliated organisations and Farmers of e-CAB will sell animals at the digital haat.
The digital cattle market will play an important role in addressing the risk of customers carrying cash and matters related to counterfeit notes.
For the online trading system of sacrificial animals, buyers and traders will not need to bother about carrying cash.
