Police have been given three days to grill Dhaka University Associate Professor Sudip Chakroborthy in a case filed over the suspected suicide of a student from his department.
Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam passed the remand order after a hearing on Sunday, said Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Kamal Hossain, bdnews24.com reports.
The case follows the death of Munira Mahjabin Mimo, a 2019-20 session student of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.
Mimo was found dead at her family home in Badda on Apr 26.
Police said a note recovered from her room mentioned the teacher.
Following the discovery, Mimo’s father, Mohammad Golam Mostafa, filed a case accusing the teacher of instigating the death.
The investigating officer, Badda Police Station Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain, initially sought a three-day remand on Apr 28.
The court fixed Sunday for the hearing in the presence of the suspect.
After hearing from both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail petition and granted police three days to interrogate Sudip in custody.
He had earlier been sent to jail on Apr 27 following his arrest.
