Former MP Haji Salim arrested

Police have arrested former member of parliament for Dhaka-7 constituency Haji Mohammad Salim.

Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, Joint Commissioner of Police (North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police, told the media that he was arrested from Bangshal police station area in ​​the capital on Sunday (September 1) night.

Haji Selim is accused in several murder cases.

Apart from politics, he owns several business entities. There are allegations of encroachment of public and private property against him.

Haji Salim was first elected member of parliament in 1996 with Awami League ticket.

The Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuted Haji Salim and his wife Gulshan Ara in 2007 on charges of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and withholding wealth information. The trial court sentenced him to 13 years in prison in the case on 27 April 2008.

In 2022, the High Court upheld Haji Selim's 10 years’ imprisonment. Later he surrendered to the court and the High Court granted him bail in January 2023.

Haji Mohammad Salim was born on October 5, 1958 in Dhaka.
