The proctorial body of Chittagong University (CU), with the help of the university police outpost, has recovered an illegal liquor factory in a makeshift room on the campus and detained two individuals.

The detainees were identified as Suman Chakma and his associate. Suman had been living and farming for about 15 years on a piece of land leased by one Bokhtiar Fakir.

The raid was conducted around 12:30 am on Monday based on a tip-off, led by CU Proctor Dr Hossain Shahid Sohrawardi and Assistant Proctor Nurul Hamid Kanan.

They also seized a large quantity of locally brewed liquor along with wildlife-hunting equipment during the raid on the room, located on the north side of a bridge in the Greenhouse area behind the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Assistant Proctor Kanan said suspicious movement of outsiders and the presence of several students near the pond area raised concerns among the security officials.

Following discreet surveillance and several rounds of reconnaissance, a team of 7–8 members, including security supervisors Nuruddin and Mohiuddin, cordoned off the house during the raid.

The team recovered around 30 litres of liquor, 5 litres of “dexti,” bottles prepared for delivery, and various brewing equipment. A notebook containing sales records was also seized.

Kanan further stated that steps have been taken to cancel the land lease due to illegal activities conducted on university property.
