The BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan in Dhaka is almost empty after the death of a police constable in violent clashes with the law enforcers during a rally.

Some BNP workers injured in the clashes were lying on tables in the media briefing room of the office on Saturday evening. Around 10 members of Mohila Dal, the women’s front of the party, were also inside, reports bdnews24.com.

One of them, Zebunnesa, said they took shelter inside the office because it was difficult to stay outside with tear gas in the air.

She requested journalists to help them out.

Some of those injured claimed they were hit by bullets when police opened fire.

They claimed police fired tear gas and stun grenades at the Kakrail intersection sometime after the rally began at Naya Paltan around 1 pm.

Police then targeted the BNP supporters near the stage, leading to the clashes and foiling the programme, according to the protesters.

Police said the constable died after suffering an injury to the head at the Dainik Bangla intersection during the clashes.

The ruling Awami League and the Jamaat-e-Islami also held rallies without major incidents at venues near the BNP programme.
