A three-member BNP delegation, led by the party’s Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, will meet Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Thursday to convey the party’s concerns about the neutrality of the commission.
The meeting is expected to begin at 11am at the Nirbachan Bhaban, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
The two other members of the BNP delegation are the party Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Ismail Zabiullah and former secretary Dr Mohammed Jakaria.
Party sources said the BNP team will express its concerns about the neutrality of the Election Commission and some officials in the administration.
A senior BNP leader said they have observed that some officials in the administration and the EC maintain close links with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, which poses a challenge to holding a credible national election.
He said the BNP delegation will urge the Election Commission to take measures so that partisan officials cannot influence the election process.
Earlier on Tuesday, a three-member BNP delegation, led by its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and called for ensuring neutrality of the government and its institutions.
The party also urged the interim government to act “in the mode of a caretaker government” to ensure a free, fair and acceptable national election scheduled for February next year.
“We met the Chief Adviser to share some of our political concerns, especially about the upcoming parliamentary election. To make the election meaningful, neutral and acceptable to all, the interim government now needs to function in the style of a caretaker government,” Fakhrul told reporters after the meeting.
