Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has been admitted to United Hospital in Dhaka after doctors detected blocks in his heart and recommended immediate bypass surgery, according to his personal assistant.

The decision was made on Wednesday, after a coronary angiogram detected three significant blocks in his heart, Nazrul Islam, the Jamaat chief's personal aide said.

The tests were conducted after Shafiqur collapsed while delivering a speech at the party’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, reports bdnews24.com.

“Doctors have advised bypass surgery instead of angioplasty,” said Nazrul, adding that the exact date of the procedure has yet to be confirmed.

The Jamaat chief has requested prayers for his speedy recovery.

On Jul 19, while addressing the party’s supporters at the national rally in Suhrawardy Udyan, Shafiqur suddenly collapsed on stage.

He briefly regained consciousness and resumed his speech but collapsed again shortly afterwards.

He continued addressing the gathering while sitting with his legs spread out on the stage, and doctors attending to him.

Following the event, he was taken to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi. Initial tests revealed no serious issues, and he was discharged the next day.
