Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Md Aminul Islam said investigators have found that the bodies of many people killed during the July mass uprising were dumped into a river near Dhaka from a hospital.

He said those responsible, including the then hospital authorities and others involved, would be identified and brought to justice once the investigation is completed.

The Chief Prosecutor made the remarks on Wednesday after visiting the mass grave of the July martyrs adjacent to the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial graveyard in Rayerbazar in the capital.

According to the prosecution, 114 bodies have been buried at the Rayerbazar mass grave. So far, the identities of eight July martyrs have been confirmed, while efforts are underway to identify the others.

Citing United Nations information, Aminul Islam said nearly 1,400 people were killed during the July mass uprising.

He said the visit to the mass grave is part of the ongoing investigation. So far, the identities of 834 July martyrs have been established.

He added that, besides Rayerbazar, investigators will also inspect mass graves in Jatrabari, Matuail, Narayanganj and Munshiganj. The identities of those killed will be established through DNA testing and other scientific methods.

Mr Islam also said investigators are trying to identify the bodies that were reportedly dumped into the river.
