Shahjalal International Airport has launched a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Management Centre (ATMC) to overhaul Bangladesh’s airspace management and enhance aviation safety.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam inaugurated the facility on Monday morning, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) said in a media statement, bdnews24.com reports.
According to CAAB, the project was implemented with technological support from France-based multinational company Thales.
The launch of the ATMC is expected to bring positive changes in the country’s airspace management.
The authority said the new system will improve flight accuracy and punctuality, increase airspace capacity, and significantly reduce safety risks.
With advanced technology, the centre will enable more effective monitoring and control of flights, helping Bangladesh meet international standards.
CAAB also believes the system will contribute to foreign currency earnings and enhance the strategic importance of the country’s airspace.
Speaking at the inauguration, Afroza said: “Today marks a historic milestone in the country’s civil aviation sector. With the introduction of a modern and automated air traffic management system, Bangladesh’s airspace will become safer, more efficient and aligned with international standards.”
She added, “The technology supplied by Thales will significantly enhance airspace management capacity. With continued government initiatives, efforts are underway to transform Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport into a global aviation hub.”
State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said, “It will create new opportunities for building integrated airspace management through regional cooperation and information exchange.”
CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mostofa Mahmud Siddique said, “By overcoming long-standing limitations and introducing a state-of-the-art ATM-CNS system, it will be possible to ensure safety, efficiency and international standards.”
French Ambassador Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet said France would continue to support the development of Bangladesh’s aviation sector in the future.
