A RAB member has been stabbed to death reportedly by a mugging suspect whom he tried to intercept during a police chase near Keane Bridge in Sylhet.

The victim has been identified as Emon Acharya, a member of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9.

He was on duty in plainclothes at the time of the incident on Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Police have arrested the suspect, identified as Asadul Alam Bappi, from the scene.

Bappi, who is also identified by the law enforcers as a drug addict, is a named suspect in multiple drug and mugging cases, police said.

The incident unfolded when a patrol team from the Kotwali Police Station chased a group of suspected muggers and drug abusers near the Keane Bridge, according to Md Monzurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

As the suspects attempted to flee, Emon, who was nearby, managed to intercept and grab one of them.

"The drug abuser then stabbed the RAB member with a knife," Monzurul said.

Emon was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
