BSC tops turnover chart for third week on DSE

Ten most-traded firms accounted for 27 per cent of the turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) in the outgoing week, with Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) dominating the turnover list.

The BSC had been leading the market turnover chart for the past three weeks as investors chased its shares, buoyed by its promising business outlook.

On Thursday, the state-run entity reported a 23 per cent year-on-year growth in profit to Tk 622 million for the January-March quarter of FY23.

According to the DSE data, some 16.87 million BSC shares were traded during the week, generating a turnover of Tk 2.29 billion, which was 5 percent of the week's total turnover.

The week's total turnover stood at Tk 45.86 billion, up from 36.80 billion in the week before at the Dhaka bourse.

The BSC posted a staggering 213 per cent profit growth to Tk 2.26 billion in FY22, thanks to the surge in freight charges during the year.

Following its record high profit, its stock price peaked to Tk 173 on September 22 last year. The corporation's stock price closed at Tk 134 on Thursday, shedding 0.74 per cent over the week before. However, its stock price soared 22 per cent since January this year.

Intraco Refueling Station came second on the turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 1.51 billion changing hands following the news that it signed a deal with Sundarban Gas Company to supply gas to different industrial areas of Gazipur from Bhola.

The company's share price, however, dropped 2.43 per cent to close at Tk 40.20 on Thursday.

Eastern Housing clinched the third spot, with shares worth Tk 1.29 billion changing hands. The lone listed real estate firm's share closed at Tk 105.70, losing 1.40 per cent over the previous week.

Rupali Life Insurance emerged as fourth, with shares worth Tk 1.27 billion changing hands. The life insurer's share price jumped 39.02 per cent to close at Tk 165.30 on Thursday.

Navana Pharma notched the fifth spot, with shares worth Tk 1.09 billion changing hands. The drug maker's stock price soared 21.86 per cent to close at Tk 100.90 on Thursday.

Turnover of Orion Infusion was Tk 1.07 billion. The company's share price rose 6.33 per cent to close at Tk 369.50 on Thursday.

Gemini Sea Food featured a turnover of Tk 1.06 billion. The frozen food exporter's share closed at Tk 764.30, gaining 4.28 per cent over the week before.

The turnover of Chartered Life Insurance was Tk 322 million. The life insurer's share price rose 13.46 per cent to close at Tk 86.80 on Thursday.

Meghna Life Insurance featured a turnover of Tk 913 million. Its share closed at Tk 86.90 on Thursday, rising 15.10 per cent.

Sea Pearl Beach Resorts also made its way to the week's top turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 824 million changing hands. The company's share rose 13.57 per cent to close at Tk 240.20 on Thursday.
