The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham Bangladesh) on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the death of its former president Dr Forrest E Cookson, who passed away last night while undergoing treatment at United Hospital in Dhaka, according to a press release.
Born on April 26, 1934, in the United States, Dr Cookson first came to Bangladesh in the mid-1980s to contribute to a financial sector reform initiative. He worked as a consultant to Bangladesh Bank and played a significant role in the financial sector reform programme during the 1990s.
Over time, he developed a strong and lasting connection with Bangladesh, dedicating a substantial part of his professional life to the country. He also served as a consultant to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and other institutions, contributing to various areas of the country’s economic development.
During his tenure as president of AmCham Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, Dr Cookson played a key role in strengthening the Chamber’s institutional foundation and advancing US–Bangladesh business relations.
AmCham said Dr Cookson remained closely associated with the organisation even after his presidency, regularly participating in events and contributing to the AmCham Journal. In his later years, he also wrote regularly on Bangladesh’s financial sector and investment climate in leading newspapers and publications.
AmCham Bangladesh said it remains deeply grateful for his contributions and will remember him with respect and admiration. It extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and others who were touched by his life and work.
