The Organization for Socio-Economic Development (AOSED) has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Smart Bangladesh Award-2023’ alongside other entities from diverse sectors.

This recognition highlights AOSED's exceptional role as a leading organisation dedicated to enhancing resilience and expertise in coastal districts through an ICT-based 'Early Warning Response Mechanism'(EWRM).

The award presentation took place during the Sheikh Russel Day 2023 ceremony at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina graced the event as the chief guest, as reported by AOSED.

Shamim Arfeen, the executive director of AOSED, accepted the award on behalf of the organisation.

Arfeen expressed, "We view this award not only as an honor but also as an opportunity for increased responsibilities. We are committed to expanding the reach of this program extensively and seek the cooperation of government, non-government, and relevant individuals and institutions."

The southern coastal regions of Bangladesh, where approximately 3 million people primarily rely on engine-driven small boats for their livelihoods in the coastal and adjacent areas, have faced a substantial increase in vulnerabilities to climate change-induced disasters such as cyclones, depression, storm surges, and salinity over the past two decades.

Consequently, the income of coastal residents has dwindled, reflecting the impact on their livelihoods.

Climate change-induced impacts, coupled with various natural hazards, have heightened vulnerabilities to disasters in the coastal districts.

Utilising this system, real-time vessel tracking from central monitoring hubs to the coastal areas and the dissemination of essential weather-related information have significantly enhanced resilience among the coastal districts, according to Mr Arfeen.
