Banglalink, the country’s leading innovative digital operator, has taken a groundbreaking step by introducing solar power at its Gazipur Data Center with an ambition to deliver on its commitment to leverage technology in empowering communities in an environmentally sustainable manner.

With the installation of an 80KW solar power system at its Gazipur Facility, Banglalink is now the first mobile network operator (MNO) in Bangladesh to integrate green energy into a data centre.

According to a press release, the initiative marks a significant milestone in Banglalink’s ESG journey, which demonstrates the operator’s commitment to carbon reduction and sustainable infrastructure leadership in the telecom sector. In line with that, Banglalink has been investing actively in long-term solutions that balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility.

Huseyin Turker, Chief Technology and Information Officer of Banglalink, said, “Through this initiative, Banglalink has set a national benchmark for sustainable innovation that will drive significant environmental impact. This new system will produce around 0.13 Gigawatt-hour of clean energy every year. It will help reduce carbon emissions by 60 tons annually and save the company about USD 12,600 each year in energy costs. The setup utilizes 9,000 square feet of previously unused rooftop space. More importantly, Banglalink expects rapid ROI by aiming to recover the full cost of the project. Banglalink is focusing to increase more green energy generations by utilizing unused spaces. To minimize environmental impact, renewability, sustainability, and reducing the carbon footprint, everyone should come forwards for the better future”.

To ensure maximum energy yield and efficiency, the solar system was deployed following an extensive site analysis and strategic planning. It will provide a solid foundation for sustainable transformation as the company aims to support the Bangladesh Energy Efficiency and Conservation Masterplan 2030 (Section 2.1.3(2)) and align with global sustainability standards. It will strengthen regulatory compliance and ensure that the infrastructure is future ready. It also contributes to Banglalink’s broader ambition of embedding sustainable practices into every layer of its digital infrastructure, from network operations to data management and energy use.

By utilizing solar energy, Banglalink can lower its carbon emissions and overall environmental impact while also enhancing its operational efficiency and future readiness. This initiative reflects Banglalink’s commitment to becoming an eco-conscious mobile operator and its effort in encouraging other players to adopt renewable energy models and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in green telecom innovation.

This initiative makes Banglalink a pioneer in paving the way for a cleaner, greener future and marks a significant step in fulfilling its mission to reduce environmental impact. This time-befitting initiative reflects how digital infrastructure and sustainability can coexist, unlocking business value while creating positive environmental outcomes.
