Chittagong Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) operated by the Bangladesh Navy officially took charge of New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) on July 07, as the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has not extended the contract with Saif Powertec Limited for NCT operation, which ended the previous day.
According to the instruction of the ministry, the CPA handed over responsibility to CDDL.
Talking to The Financial Express, Secretary of CPA Omar Faruk said, "The contract signed with Saif Powertec has not been renewed. The officials and employees, who were working under the management of Saif Powertec Limited, are now working under CDDL management. So, there is no problem at the NCT. Containers are being loaded, unloaded, and delivered smoothly. The CPA board approved the move in line with the government's decision."
In response to a question about the agreement with CDDL, he said, "The formal agreement between the CPA and CDDL will be finalised soon in accordance with the Public Procurement Rules (PPR). Although the Navy cannot directly operate the terminal on technical ground, it will manage NCT activities through CDDL."
Over 3,000 personnel who were under the management of Saif Powertec are now working under CDDL which is the only dry dock in Bangladesh. It is located on the bank of the River Karnaphuli stretching on 48 acres of land within Chittagong Port Area.
