Broiler chicken, Pakistani and Sonali chicken and layer chicken, the key protein sources for the common people, became costlier in Dhaka city’s kitchen markets on Sunday, increasing their sufferings further.
Prices of newly harvested local onion, one of the main cooking ingredients, remained static at wholesale and retail markets maintaining its falling trend.
However, stakeholders said, prices of many other essentials remained steady, at a higher level in most cases.
Broiler chicken was selling at Tk 175 a kilogram at the retail level which was sold at Tk 170 a kg Saturday, Rasel (single name), a salesman at New Bismillah Broiler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The Financial Express.
The price of broiler chicken at the wholesale level also increased by Tk 3.0-Tk 4.0 per kg, he stated.
The price of Pakistani and Sonali chicken at both wholesale and retail levels increased by Tk 10 a kg on Sunday, compared to the past few days, according to him.
Layer chicken was selling at Tk 205 per kg at wholesale level Sunday whereas it was Tk 200 per kg Saturday, he stated.
The retailers were selling layer chicken at Tk 215 per kg today which was being sold at Tk 210 a couple of days ago, he mentioned.
Red eggs were selling at Tk 100 a dozen at the retail level in the same market which was the same as Saturday, Rasel added.
The retail price of broiler chicken was reported to be Tk 155- Tk 160 a kg, according to the Department of Agriculture Marketing while the retail price of local onion was reported to be Tk 50- Tk 54 a kg.
The newly harvested onions were selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 a kg at the wholesale level on Sunday which was the same as Saturday, said Akashe( single name), a vendor at Mohammadpur Krishi Market.
Prices of imported Burmese onion remained Tk 29 a kg at the wholesale level. Retailers were selling it at Tk 40 a kg which was the same as Saturday.
Items such as flour, edible oil and sugar witnessed no remarkable change either, meaning that the previous higher level of prices continued on Sunday.
Prices of local ginger and garlic remained static. This correspondent was also told that prices of brinjals, pumpkins, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, newly harvested potato and green chili remained steady in the past few days.
The Department of Agricultural Marketing report showed that four pieces of eggs were selling at Tk 32-Tk 34. Accordingly, price of a kg local sugar was Tk 76- Tk 78 a kg, salt (packed) Tk 27- Tk 32 a kg, lentils Tk 105-Tk 113 a kg and flour (packed) Tk 39-Tk 41 a kg.
Red tomatoes were selling at Tk 47-Tk 55 per kg and soybean oil was selling at Tk 143-Tk 145 a litre, garlic (local) at Tk 46-Tk 58 a kg, garlic (imported) at Tk 147-Tk 155 a kg, ginger (local) at Tk 69-Tk 78 a kg and ginger (imported) at Tk 84-Tk 96 a kg.
Beef was selling at Tk 551-Tk 571 a kg, the DAM report added.
A vegetable vendor there, Faruk (single name), claimed that prices of almost all vegetables remained unchanged on Sunday.
Mobile vegetable vendor named Hriday was selling cauliflower (larger size) at Tk 30-Tk 35 each piece, the same level as of Saturday’s.
New potato was selling at Tk 23-Tk 25 a kg at the wholesale level, vendor Faruk added.
Imported ginger was selling at Tk 110 a kg and imported garlic at Tk 160- Tk165 a kg at the wholesale level on Sunday, said vendor Akash.
Jubayer Hossain, a wholesaler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said the prices of flour, edible oil, sugar and lentils remained at the previously higher level.
