The government has intensified its market monitoring of essential commodities ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

Three dedicated teams will start monitoring markets across Dhaka metropolitan today. The decision came from a workshop attended by leaders of market monitoring teams formed earlier to keep the prices and supply of essential items stable in the capital city.

Acting Commerce Secretary Md Abdur Rahim Khan was the chief guest at the workshop held at the commerce ministry on Tuesday.

He stated that the commerce ministry monitors commodity markets on a regular basis through the district and Dhaka metropolitan administration. Besides, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) keeps a close watch on the markets, preventing unscrupulous traders and hoarders from making the essential market volatile and unstable, he said, adding that officials from the commerce ministry have been instructed to intensify their monitoring efforts.

The commerce ministry would hand out leaflets while local market management committees would use loudspeakers to raise awareness in this regard. Monitoring activities would be conducted at kitchen markets, grocery stores and superstores.
