A 16-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her parents in Khulna after they refused to accept her relationship, police said on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Arfana Hossain Nirjona, a resident of Bosupara under Sonadanga Police Station.

The information was disclosed at a press briefing held at the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) headquarters on Saturday.

On Wednesday, locals found an unidentified teenage girl stuffed inside a plastic sack on Road No. 3 in the Prantika Residential Area around 9:00 pm and informed police.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Khulna Medical College Hospital for an autopsy and launched an investigation, police said.

Police, in association with the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and other agencies, attempted to identify the victim by circulating her photograph on social media, broadcasting wireless messages and collecting information from various sources.

Within 24 hours, investigators identified the victim as Arfana Hossain Nirjona. Police later questioned her mother, Arifa Yasmin Sima, at their residence.

Although she initially provided misleading information, she later confessed to her involvement in the killing during intensive interrogation. She gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, police said.

According to the police, the family had been in conflict for some time over the girl's relationships with several boys.

During an argument, her father, Md Alim Hossain Akash, allegedly struck her on the head three to four times with a stick, causing fatal injuries due to excessive bleeding. Later, the parents placed the body in a plastic sack and dumped it on the road.

KMP Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan said police filed the murder case as the victim's parents were the accused.

Efforts are underway to arrest the girl's father, he said.
