Dhaka University has formed committees to investigate alleged irregularities in appointments made during the Awami League government’s tenure from January 2009 to 2024.
The committee reviewing recruitment transparency will be headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Abdus Salam, with all faculty deans as members.
Another committee has been formed to review research activities under the World Bank and University Grants Commission-funded Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) and examine whether project funds were properly used.
It will be led by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, the university announced on Thursday.
Following the fall of the Awami League government after the Aug 5, 2024 uprising, at least 68 Dhaka University teachers allegedly linked to the party have been barred from teaching over accusations of taking positions against students during the movement.
Some students have accused several of those teachers of inciting attacks by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, while others faced boycotts for joining a “Blue Panel” rally on Aug 3, 2024.
The university has also temporarily suspended 128 students over allegations of involvement in attacks on protesters during the July movement.
Earlier this week, the Syndicate took action against several teachers. Sociology Prof Sadeka Halim, nuclear engineering Prof Md Shafiqul Islam and Prof Afroza Shelly were temporarily suspended over separate allegations.
Four more teachers were removed from all academic and administrative responsibilities.
The Syndicate also approved plans to build a July Memorial near the administrative building, with the foundation stone scheduled to be laid on Aug 5.
