DU’s 98th founding anniversary being observed

The Dhaka University Day is being observed on the campus today (Monday) amid festivity, marking the 98th founding anniversary of the country's highest seat of learning.

The theme of this year's day is "Quality education: barriers and solution".

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the daylong programme in the morning at Mall Chattar of the University.

A number of processions were brought out from the residential halls of the university at 10 am while the national flag, DU flag and flags of different halls were hoisted at 10:15 am.

Teachers and students gathered at the Mall Chattar in front of the Administrative Building and brought out a procession which ended at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), says a UNB report.

A discussion meeting titled 'Qualitative education: barriers and solution' is scheduled to be held at the TSC auditorium where Professor Emeritus Dr Serajul Islam Choudhury is supposed to present the keynote speech with the DU VC in chair.

The university authorities will also hold cultural sessions, sports and debate competitions to mark the day.

The day is being observed to mark the launching of academic activities by the university on July 1 in 1921.

Starting off with only 847 students in three faculties and 12 departments in 1921, the university has grown to accommodate over 43,385 students and 2,010 teachers in 84 departments and 13 institutes at present.
