Our country is renowned for its grand weddings and lively traditions. However, behind the glamorous clothes and luxurious meals, one fact is frequently ignored, that is, the traditions of weddings may bear a significant burden on the planet. Green weddings are a new trend in our society as the world increasingly becomes aware of the concept of sustainability.
What is a Green Wedding?
It is a party where the organisers' primary concern is the consideration of the earth, incorporating environmentally friendly activities that generate minimal waste, reduce pollution, and respect nature and its resources.
Why would we be willing to adopt green methods even in the most cherished ceremonies?
Green weddings contribute to a better perception of life's experiences and inheritance, as we connect our brilliant experiences with the reasonable decisions that sustain the world for future generations.
It is not merely a fad, but an evolution that requires us to re-conceptualise the idea of joy and solidarity being manifested.
What can be done to green up our weddings?
Wedding couples have many decisions to make regarding location, wedding venue, catering, and decor. By integrating sustainability into every decision, we will significantly reduce the environmental impact of our parties.
For example, choosing venues that focus on renewable energy or have eco-certifications helps conserve essential resources.
Consider taking your qubul's and vows in a lush green garden or natural scenery with attributes of nature, such as harmony and rebirth.
Regarding this, newlywed Zarif Shahriar Niloy says, "Event planners need to ensure these aspects of sustainability and eco-friendly activities while organising the event."
Innovative couples are now opting for decorations made from biodegradable materials or reusable options, such as using potted plants in place of fresh flowers that wilt easily.
It not only helps to reduce waste but also leaves a lasting memory, as the guests can take home a living reminder of the love and commitment shown on the big day. Have you ever imagined how sustainable decoration could bring a special touch to your wedding?
When making decisions about decorations and wedding favours, consider using locally produced goods. This approach not only supports local craft communities but also reduces carbon emissions associated with mass production and transportation.
Elegant yet culturally rich and long-standing clothing includes traditional garments, crafted from organic or recycled materials, such as Jamdani sarees featuring delicate embroidery, which offer an alternative to mass-produced clothing.
Ethics in eating and waste Management
The weddings of our community revolve around the food, featuring elaborate displays for guests to enjoy. Green weddings often feature locally grown, organic food dinners that are typically vegetable-based, with the possibility of sustainable meat that is designed with consideration for what is seasonally available and what pleases the senses.
Fariha Tasnim Seherin, another newlywed, states, "We can make weddings more eco-friendly by cutting down on plastic use. Even simple changes like using reusable decorations, avoiding food waste, and renting outfits instead of buying new ones can lead to meaningful change."
Can you serve a menu inspired by local delicacies without going overboard, and benefit both the planet and your guests in the process? Foodservice providers are now increasingly able to offer zero-waste catering, allowing any leftovers to be donated or composted. Other ways to cut extravagance without sacrificing the cheerfulness of the celebration include having smaller or merged events.
What is the use of taking green initiatives?
Pollution and waste management problems are among the issues that our nation must address, and they become more significant due to the rapid rate of urbanisation.
Weddings, being a high-scale social occasion, may be a substantial contributor to these issues, provided they are not carried out in a well-mannered manner.
To think globally and act locally, adopting environmentally friendly wedding practices can be highly effective. Following this, newlywed Shahana Runa expresses, "We shouldn't use firecrackers. We can go for a more green venue instead of community centres."
The use of disposable plastics can be minimised, and noise and light pollution can be kept to a minimum, thus making weddings both pleasant and environmentally friendly.
The uniqueness of green weddings lies in their accessibility. Its modifications, on a small scale, such as using digital invitations instead of paper distributions or implementing carpooling plans to reduce emissions, can bring significant changes.
A community sense of sustainability can be created by encouraging guests to participate in the day with conscious awareness.
Couples will be able to promote eco-friendly decisions while also following traditions.
For example, incorporating environmentally friendly sarees into traditional rituals creates a festival that not only adheres to tradition but also helps conserve the environment. There can even be discussions of green wedding fairs or workshops that showcase vendors and ideas promoting sustainability.
Planning a green wedding is about hosting a party that prioritises the earth's well-being while still fostering human connection.
The eco-friendly way of thinking has been an inspiration for many, and people are taking daring steps to reduce waste, cut back on pollution, and develop rituals that strike a balance between fun and a sense of duty.
With green weddings, we can usher in an era of mutual fruitfulness between tradition and environment. We are leading the way by getting married in a natural way that will foster true love and promote a more delightful, greener lifestyle for tomorrow.
